ILCA Sunshine Open

April 20-21, 2024

We had very shifty conditions and not much sunshine for SSA’s annual spring invitational, sponsored by ILCA Fleet 10 and Annapolis Sail Works. 36 competitors made it to the starting line (evenly split between two fleets) and made the most of the on and off breeze. Special thanks for the RC work by Joe Friebele, Peter Rich, Greg Cukor and all of the volunteers at SSA.

On the first day we pushed to get 4 races in the ILCA 7 Fleet and 3 races in the ILCA 6 Fleet. The two fleets came together for a complicated start to race 4 (ILCA 7) and finish to race 3 (ILCA 6). This moment created some confusion that eventually was resolved after a protest hearing on Sunday. To make a long story short, it’s crucial to position the leeward gate far enough away from the start to avoid any possible meeting between fleets!

Thankfully, the breeze stayed long enough on Sunday and each fleet managed two additional races to wrap up the event.
