SSA’s Chesapeake Soling Fleet hosted the 2024 Soling North American Championship regatta, May 8-12. With 18 competitors from 3 continents/8 countries (including the Independent Sovereignties of Southern California and Nova Scotia) and 8 SSA skippers, the event featured a strong local Soling Fleet (currently 9 member/owners) and great prospects for continued growth.

The race committee comprised our terrific and talented SSA volunteers led by the Co-PRO Team of Barbara Vosbury and visiting National Race Officer and Soling lover, Russ Sobotta. This stellar team provided the fleet with 5 terrific races over 4 challenging days of weather.

Not to be outdone by the fantastic sailing, the Chesapeake Soling Fleet organized land-based activities including an Opening Ceremonies honoring all nations represented with a champagne toast, and a Friday gala celebrating the “Soling Family” with over-the-top support from Main & Market; Sycamore Point Café, and the Liz Fixsen’s 2024 Soling NAs Jazz Band.

Peter Hall from Canada with Commodore Bruce Empey onboard took the top spot of the event on a tie-break with very consistent finishes. The top three also included Roman Koch from Germany and Ross Findlater from Canada.

The Soling Fleet thanks the many club Members and Staff who contributed to the event’s great success. It is through this cooperation that SSA shows why it is one of the best sailing venues in the world to hold championship events, and why each competitor always wants to come back.
