73rd Annual Lightning Frigid Digit Highlights
Sep 27-29, 2024
What a fantastic Weekend! Things kicked on Friday afternoon with special guest Greg Fisher, Evolution Sails, who lead the Lightning Lab. After assisting with tuning and general set-up questions on the lot, we were able to get 5 boats on the water Friday late afternoon to work on some starts and a few quick races. Greg was there in a coach boat to provide video coaching/feedback. Afterwards there was a briefing in the SSA Coaching Room for more discussion. Save the date: Greg will be hosting a ZOOM Meeting Wednesday evening 11/06/24 to review the video and discussion of the Lightning Lab.
This was a busy weekend…we co-hosted with the Snipe Fleet for our “Hard-Chined” Frigid Digit and it was so nice to co-host this event. This was a well-attended event with 18 boats racing from each fleet. The Lightnings almost had 20 boats but there were some last-minute cancellations. We had strong competition and some big names in attendance; it was nice to have the opportunity to visit with so many out-of-town friends! There is only one downside to co-hosting with the Snipe Fleet, not having Augie Diaz race Lightnings with us, (but at least he was part of the regatta!) We were able to get three good races in on Saturday. There were a few delays due to light breeze, but the RC made some great calls in holding off racing until the winds settled. After racing, Dave Stark gave a chalk-talk after on the deck with lots of Q&A Discussion. The highlight was the final question asked before dinner: Amanda Dame proposed to Bryan Burke (and he said Yes!) The beautiful evening was topped off with acoustic music by Shawn Owen Band and an excellent dinner catered by local favorite Bread & Butter Kitchen.
With an early start, Sunday had slightly better breeze than Saturday and we were able to get the final 3 races completed which enabled a drop and made scoring interesting! The awards were extra special, home-made candles from Mt. Gay Rum made by Bryan Burke!
