Day Sailing Mid Winter Championship
The Day Sailer Midwinters were held in Tampa, March 10,11,12 with a practice race on Friday and racing on Saturday and Sunday. Several teams made the trip south to race in Florida, including two teams from Ohio, and three teams from Annapolis. The Tampa Sailing Squadron was a fantastic host Yacht Club and Darin O’Neal as the Day Sailer Regatta Chair made sure everyone had a great time, with amazing food, terrific trophies and great door prizes. The RC put on 4 breezy races on Saturday and 1 light air race on Sunday. Saturday’s windy conditions offered some tough early season hiking in chop upwind, with spicy surfing, shoot up, conditions downwind.
Matt White and his daughter Morgan Wittrock led with 4 bullets after Saturday and a second-place finish on Sunday gave Bluebird the Championship. Scott Graham and Dick Harmon were second in Worlwind and Chris and Dave Kelly were Third in Swamp Thing. Bob Damon and Mary-Sophia Smith teamed up aboard Jamaican me Crazy for a fourth-place finish despite capsizing on Friday in the practice race.
SSA was well represented with Eric McCaffery and Joy Sheets made up the third Fleet One team.
We had 10 boats on the line, which was a nice turn out, hopefully we can get more next year, it’s a great time. The regatta was really fun in that we shared the course with Buccaneers, Mutineers and Windmills…after being around those pesky Buccaneers it was decided that the Day Sailers need a cheer as good as their “Aargh!”
