COVID-19 Update from the Commodore
Dear SSA members:
In the month or so since my last letter on this topic, Covid-19 cases and deaths have continued to increase dramatically in Maryland and in Anne Arundel County. Today, in light of a record-setting daily and 7-day average increase in new Covid-19 cases, County Executive Steuart Pittman announced additional restrictions to fight the spread of Covid-19, some of which will have a direct impact on our sailing activities at SSA. Among other things, the order, which is in effect from December 16 through January 13, suspends all organized sports play or practice. While the executive order does not take effect until next week, it is in response to the public health situation as it stands right now. Therefore, effective immediately, our Opti, 420, FJ, and Laser clinics will be suspended until the expiration of the order, as well as Laser Frostbiting, the Ice B owl, and any other club-sponsored racing or practice activities.
In addition, the order restricts restaurants to carry-out or delivery only, which will impact our snack bar operator, Botanas Fajardo. We will be temporarily removing the tables and chairs on the upper deck to comply with this regulation, but I would urge you to continue to support them whenever you are in the mood for a takeout meal.
A consistent theme in all the public health guidance is the importance of social distancing combined with mask wearing, to protect yourself and those around you from the spread of the virus. And, of course, if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or have recently been in contact with someone who has, please do not come to the club.
As a Frostbite competitor myself, I had really hoped we would not have to cancel any race days due to Covid-19. But if we can all stay safe through the holidays there is hope that we may see some easing of the restrictions by late January. I will keep you updated as the situation evolves.
I wish all of you a safe and healthy holiday season.
Best regards,
Eric Johnson, Commodore
