MEMBERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

SSA has attained its present status as one of the United States’ leading one-design racing clubs in great part because its individual members have contributed both their time and physical labor to fulfill the Club’s needs. SSA is committed to preserving this tradition of member participation, and new members are expected to accept the responsibility that goes beyond simple payment of dues and fees. Each member is responsible each year for a minimum number of service days, their choice of either Work Party and/or Race Committee, to fulfill, depending upon their class of membership.

CLASSES OF MEMBERSHIP (2025 rates)

  1. Associate Membership ($1019): The membership class for new adult members of SSA who own a boat and/or wish to sail and race. Associate members have all the rights and privileges of membership except for voting, are responsible for 3 service days per year, and are eligible for Junior Program tuition discounts.

  2. Supporting Membership ($650):  For non-boat owners who do not regularly skipper a boat at SSA, Supporting members do not pay an initiation fee, are responsible for 2 service days per year, and must reapply each year to certify that they do not currently own (full or shared ownership) a sailboat that could be raced in any SSA racing event.

  3. Student Over 21 Membership ($433): The membership class for full-time students who are over age 21, these members must reapply for this status each year and certify that they are full-time students. Members of this class enjoy all the rights and privileges of membership, minus voting, and are responsible for 2 service days per year.

  4. Junior Associate Membership ($347): The membership class for persons who will have reached their 14th but not their 21st birthday during the current membership year, (November 1 through October 31) Junior Associate members must “upgrade” to an adult membership status on November 1st of the calendar year in which they will turn 21 and are responsible for 1 service day per year. (If you are interested in Junior Program participation for particular events, Junior Club Membership can be purchased here.)

  5. Special Membership ($650): This is a membership class for those who may apply under unusual circumstances directly to the Board of Governors and which is granted only at their discretion. Special members do not pay an initiation fee but are responsible for 3 service days per year and must reapply each year.

  6. Winter Membership ($226): Winter membership at Severn Sailing Association is only available to boat owners meeting the following criteria: 1) you must reside more than 150 miles from SSA and 2) you must race at least one winter event run by SSA. Winter membership is for the 2024-2025 winter season only, beginning November 10, 2024 and ending April 1, 2025. Membership shall include a boat storage option, on a space available basis, with priority given to full-time members. Boat storage is limited to one boat which is actually used for winter racing at SSA.

Member Boat Storage

Members at SSA can store boats on the lot. Once you’ve completed your application, feel free to submit a boat storage application by clicking here. Keep in mind that the Office will not act upon your application until your membership is approved.

Once you’ve set up your account, please fill in the form below and select the “Submit” button.  SSA’s Membership Committee will contact you shortly to confirm your application.

If your completed application (including Letters of Recommendation) is received a week before the end of any month, you can anticipate that notice of the disposition of your application will be returned to you within the following month.  An invitation to the SSA Quarterly New Member Orientation will follow, to which you are strongly encouraged to attend in order to learn how to maximize the investment of your membership.
