2023 ILCA CRAB CLAW

September 23 & 24, 2023: This year’s Crab Claw was delayed by Tropical Storm Ophelia, which brought gusts of 40-50 knots to the area. However, sailors gathered Saturday evening in the upstairs great room to enjoy local crabs and all the excellent menu options from Botanas Fajardo!

Stormy outside, but toasty inside with crabs and friends!

On Sunday morning we reconvened for a day of great racing in the remaining breeze of the passing storm (SE / S 10-12 knots). A handful of last-minute entries made for a 30 boat regatta, which is not too bad for a stormy weekend! PRO Steve Podlich and the excellent RC volunteers ran five well managed races on Sunday in Area A (near the NOAA weather buoy).

A little shower passed to the south as we waited for race 1 to begin.

Tim Herzog started the day well, but could not hold onto the lead in the final race. After warming up in race 1, Bob Tan performed consistently well in the following four races and with a bullet in the last race to secure the overall win in the ILCA 6!

ILCA 6:

1st place: Bob Tan (14 points)

2nd place: Tim Herzog (15 points)

3rd place: Kat Martin (21 points)

The competition was tight in the ILCA 7 fleet, with each sailor only a few or less boat lengths away from each other as we raced. However, Dave Waiting kept all challengers at bay with a very consistent performance during the five races (1, 3, 2, 1, 2).

ILCA 7:

1st place: Dave Waiting (9 points)

2nd place: Luke Shingledecker (14 points)

3rd place: Christopher Draper (19 points)
