420 Chesapeake Racers

420 Chesapeake Racers are our introductory racing group. They compete in regattas hosted by local clubs throughout the summer, and in select few travel regattas. The 420 Chesapeake Racers class is ideal for sailors who are very comfortable and proficient sailing a C420 and ready to test put their racing skills to the test. Sailors should already be familiar with very basic racing skills, points of sail, sail controls and parts of the boat, rigging and derigging boats, and position and posture of the skipper and crew. Parents are expected to volunteer time to drive to various events. Please contact the SSA Junior Program Director for a provisional list of events. SSA club boats can be used, but sailors are encouraged to bring their own 420. Classes will focus on refining boat handling and practicing other skills needed to become proficient racers, including:

  • Starting
  • The Racing Rules of Sailing
  • Racing tactics
  • Advanced sailing terminology
  • Trapeze
  • Spinnaker
  • Self-sufficiency on and of the water while traveling
Time: 10am-4pm

SSA Racing

Most weekends--and many weeknights--around the year, there's some sort of one-design racing happening out of Severn Sailing Association. Check out the calendar to see what's going on these days!

SSA Junior Program

SSA runs a year-round program to develop skills and a lifelong love of sailing in our younger sailors. A summer program and fall and spring high school sailing programs are just the tip of the iceberg.
