Day Sailer Summer Series

A dog days of summer heat wave, spotty wind conditions and summer vacations always make it tough to get boats on the line for a Summer Series in Annapolis. Fortunately for the 7 Day Sailers teams who did turn out this weekend, they were treated to delightful series with a smorgasbord of weather and wind conditions.

The Day Sailer fleet loves to welcome new people in to the fleet and this weekend was a perfect example. Andrew Phillips skippered the Wave for the first time and his crew Dalton Bennet, while not new sailing, was new to the Day Sailer. Also new this weekend were crews Kat Martin, Molly Ratz, Bill Updike and Valarie Theberge. We also got Jeff Seltzer and his newly named Take Five on the line and while Anna Brammer and Ike Isaacson haven’t officially christened their new boat, word is that her name will be Ala Mare.

Special thanks to Barbara Vosbury and her RC team who ran a great weekend series.

Temperatures were high on Saturday but the RC setup the perfect Windward/Leeward course in area A and we were treated with a beautiful 12-17 sea breeze out south. At the end of the day Erik McCaffery and Cathee Lee in Kanaka had a slim lead over Matt White and Kat Martin in Bluebird and Amy Harris and Molly Ratz in Morning Glory.

Saturday’s heat and breeze gave way to Sunday’s rain and light air. Rather than venturing to the Bay we opted for Carr Creek and got off two short races before the heavy rain came in and Jim Fisher and Tony Gross lead the charge to Bonatas Farjado some cold beverage and Loaded Nacho relief.

With his crew AWOL Erik McCaffery sailed solo on Sunday and in the light conditions, Erik dominated, nailing the starts and roll tacking his way up the windward legs. The most impressive thing was how he could set the pole and fly the chute even by himself, he even executed a beautiful Jibe Set! Suffice it to say Erik’s two bullets on Sunday locked up the weekend.

Even though the rest of the fleet couldn’t catch Erik it was nice to sailing in a little cool drizzle, with a light breeze, on the relatively flat water of Carr Creek.

A good time was had by all.
